Students in the Washington's Secret History: Sleuths on the Shore program had the opportunity to explore several different types of museums, archives and special collections during their Orientation Explore! program experience.
Students were embedded at the African American Schoolhouse Museum in Worton, MD, helping to begin the museum's VR tour. They also had the opportunity to tour the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as the Luce & Lunder Centers at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (the group even had the opportunity to chat with conservator Martin Kotler about his work at the museum. Students also visited the Rock Hall Watermen's Museum and had a private tour of the National Archives Museum in Washington, D.C. led by Washington College Alumni! Exploring museums, archives and special collections of all types both locally and in the nation's capital gave students an appreciation for the many different forms museums and collections can take and the important role local museums play in preserving history for generations to come.
